Here are our personal insights, gained from our own experience on the ground in China:

"You will have no problem locating an ATM or a major bank in China, that’s for sure however another option is for you to pre-purchase Chinese Yuan (RMB) in advance of leaving New Zealand.  It is always comforting to know that you have ‘cash in hand’ upon arrival".
Wendy

"Did you know when in Hong Kong, you can dine at the world’s most affordable Michelin starred restaurant in the world - Tim Ho Wan.  This restaurant boasts a 1 star rating for Yum Cha, “very good cuisine in its category” and is located in the heart of all shopping - Mongkok".
Kelvin

"Like in most overseas countries, it is expected to tip your tour guide and driver in recognition of good service. As tipping is a major part of their income, they are very, very appreciative of your kind gesture".

"If you fancy an extravagant night out in Hong Kong, why not start in Tsim Sha Tsui ( local calls it TST), grab a deck table at Wooloomooloo Prime, a stylish bar/ restaurant set amongst other high rise buildings in Hong Kong over-looking the Victoria harbour.   Do make sure you are on the deck at 8pm for ‘A Symphony of Lights’- this is a world class laser and light show, that words cannot express.  After that, take a short walk to the ferry terminal and catch the iconic Star Ferry across the Victoria Harbour to Hong Kong Island where you can sample the nightlife on the famous stretch of LKF or (Lan Kwai Fong)".
Kelvin

"Although the amount of English spoken in China is definitely increasing (especially in the larger cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou), it is comforting to undertake a Private Transfer to the hotel. After a long flight, the assistance of the English speaking guide ensures a smooth transfer to the hotel and their guidance in regards to sightseeing the following day, is invaluable".
Wendy

"I recommend that you use bottled water where possible (even brushing your teeth) or ensure the tap water used is boiled".
Wendy

"If you are not yet “shopped out”, perhaps you may be tempted to take a detour en-route to Hong Kong airport and visit the Citygate Outlets Mall in Tung Chung.  You will find over 80 international brands represented in the mall (e.g Nike, Guess, CK), sales are all-year round and there is something for everyone.   Do keep in mind your luggage allowance and flight time though!".
Kelvin

"I thoroughly recommend that prior to leaving your hotel, you ask the concierge or front desk staff to write down for you, the name and address of the hotel that you are staying in, in Mandarin. This way, if you do happen to need to ask someone to help you with directions, it is easy for the taxi driver to understand where you are wishing to return to".
